The architecture of beauty
Some painters learn to see by accident. Dr. Attieh Moezoddin learned by discipline — a doctorate's worth of it.
Dr. Moezoddin holds a PhD in the Built Environment, a field devoted to the most human of questions: how space, light, proportion and material shape the way we feel. Years of scholarly research into how people experience buildings, streets and interiors gave her something few artists ever formally acquire — a rigorous, tested understanding of why certain compositions move us and others leave us cold.
Painting was never separate from that enquiry; it was its truest expression. The same golden ratios that govern a well-composed façade govern a well-composed canvas. The way northern light falls through a window — a matter of serious academic study in her doctoral years — became the way light falls across her watercolours. Perspective, structure, atmosphere, the psychology of colour and shadow: what she once measured, she now paints.
